What is a CI File?

Capability Investigation File composition. A textual description of this image is contained in the following paragraphs.

A Capability Investigation (CI) File is a virtual folder on the relevant Capability Management Group (CMG) or Capability Planning Group (CPG) virtual Team Site.

The composition of a CI File includes:

  • Section 1: Mobilisation, Governance and Control
  • Section 2: The Conclusion
  • Section 3: The Capability Investigation Data and Working Papers
  • Section 4: Finance
  • Section 5: Decisions, Assumptions and Provenance.

Why use a CI File?

A Capability Investigation (CI) File:

  • Provides an appropriate level of rigor, project management discipline, and documentation to a CI.
  • Sets out the evidence and conclusions reached, and provides a record of the decisions made with their context.
  • Enables audit and scrutiny, and could form the basis for future business cases.
  • Allows third parties to review the work undertaken and safeguards against change of personnel.
  • Provides a formal framework that stimulates thinking and drives a structured approach to CIs.

Saving all CI documentation, working papers, analysis and conclusions in the CI folder on the Team Site ensures:

  • shared access to CI information
  • Sponsor visibility of CI progress
  • consistent structure and approach to CI work
  • an audit trail exists for decisions
  • safe retention of CI data.
