What are System Readiness Levels (SRLs) ?System Readiness Levels (SRLs) have been developed as a project management tool to capture evidence, and assess and communicate System Maturity in a consistent manner to stakeholders. SRLs define a set of nine maturity steps from Concept to in-service across a set of systems engineering disciplines. Each of the SRL steps align to key outputs from systems disciplines such as Training, Safety and Environmental, or Reliability and Maintainability. SRLs track a project’s progress against the systems engineering ‘V’ diagram, below.
What is the aim of SRLs ?SRLs aim to take a consolidated view of the essential steps needed to properly mature and deliver a complete supportable system to the User. When brought together with Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), SRLs provide a means of progressively measuring project maturity at technology, component, sub system and whole system levels. When should I use SRLs ?SRLs should be used to track a project’s progress throughout the CADMID lifecycle. Evidence of SRL achievement is used to inform assurance of projects for Director Safety and Engineering (Director S&E) at key decisions points. Why should I use SRLs ?SRLs provides the project with:
How are SRLs applied ?SRLs are a means of analysing key outputs of an equipment acquisition project structured in such a way as to provide an understanding of work required to mature the project. A matrix is used to capture these key outputs and understand how they should mature over time. Projects should track their maturity through the nine SRL steps across all relevant system disciplines and a simple self assessment tool is provided. SRL trainingPTG-AA offers specific training on Technology Management, including use and applications of SRLs, Technology Readiness Levels and technology roadmapping. Workshops can be tailored for individual Teams or other Groups. Contact the PTG-AA team for further information. SRL further informationFor further advice on System Readiness Levels contact the PTG-AA team. Feedback from users of our guidance, particularly from Delivery Teams who have applied the guidance to their projects is welcomed. All feedback, regardless of its nature, will be received as constructive and used to help develop the guidance and its application in MOD.
