Principles of Planning and Scheduling

Planning and scheduling is the process of identifying the activities, resources, actions, dependencies and timings required to accomplish an objective.

The ability to plan and schedule well is critical to any programme or project. This guidance provides an overview of Planning and Scheduling and its associated techniques.

It contains basic planning and scheduling information including:

What is planning concerned with?

  • Defining the products that will be delivered.
  • Defining quality requirements associated with products.
  • Identifying and recording activities needed to deliver the products.
  • Identifying and recording dependencies that may affect the programme or the project.
  • Analysing the resources needed to carry out the activities.

What is scheduling concerned with?

  • Developing the timing model, or schedule.
  • Estimating how long activities will take to complete.
  • Confirming the sequence activities should be completed in.
