User Modelling (Anthropometrics)

What is User Modelling?

User modelling is a collection of methods used to help understand the implications of design on the operator. User modelling utilises software programmes based on anthropometric databases to generate digital humans in a three-dimensional environment.

User modelling impacts the design of products and workplaces by determining what humans of different sizes can see, reach or lift. The digital human models can be represented at varying levels of detail enabling the designer to articulate body parts within ranges of motion to determine whether the intended design is suitable.

What should User Modelling produce?

User modelling should produce a detailed understanding of the suitability of a design with regard to what users can see, reach or lift in the proposed design environment.
