Introduction to Human Factors Integration (HFI)

What is Human Factors Integration (HFI)?

Human Factors Integration (HFI) is a process which identifies tracks and resolves human related issues. It brings together equipment, services and people, making them work together in Defence systems.

HFI can be described as the application of relevant information about:

  • human capabilities
  • limitations
  • characteristics
  • behaviour
  • motivation.

It is used in the design of products and systems which includes creating procedures for the use of people within that environment. They include the evaluation of products and procedures to make sure that they meet their objectives.

Achievement of a required level of operational effectiveness depends on the technical performance of the hardware and software, as well as the performance of the people who operate and support it.

HFI applies to equipment (off road vehicle) and non-equipment (IT infrastructure) projects.

If the human elements are not addressed, it is more likely the overall system design will fail to achieve the expected levels of operational effectiveness or safety.

Why do HFI?

People are a key part of any system. While technology has developed rapidly, the capability of human beings has remained the same for many years. This places high demands on operators and maintainers.

System developers must make sure that all human aspects are taken into account , so that their system is as easy to use a possible.

Who is responsible for HFI?

All managers involved in the acquisition of Defence equipment, systems or support must consider and manage HFI issues.
