What is Acquisition ?
Acquisition is defined by the following core activities:
- Setting and managing requirements.
- Negotiating and managing contracts.
- Programme, project and technology management.
- Through life support.
- Termination or disposal.
These activities take place in the context of Defence Policy Guidance
, Departmental Planning, and Through Life Capability Management. They endure throughout the lifecycle and contribute to delivering the Defence Vision.
The key purpose of acquisition is to:
- Provide battle winning capability for Defence.
- Ensure value for money for the taxpayer.
- Sustain a responsive Defence Industrial base.

The AOF has been updated to Version 2.0.0 on 1st April 2008 following the introduction of the main content in the tactical layer. In addition small changes have been added to the Operational layer.
