Sustainable Development

MOD is fully committed to supporting the UK Government Sustainable Development (SD) StrategyExternal link to Internet content (March 2005). All MOD programmes and projects must consider the environmental, social and economic effects of their operations as set out in the Sustainable Development and Environmental Manual – JSP 416.

The MOD published its Sustainable Development Action PlanExternal link to Internet content which commits the Department to:

  • Embedding SD principles into our relationships with suppliers
  • Ensuring all new contracts meet the Government’s minimum environmental standards
  • Reflect SD principles in the Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS)
  • Agree a 4 year MOD / Industry action plan on sustainable development
  • Meeting the Government estates sustainable operations targets on:
    • Reducing carbon emissions
    • Reducing waste
    • Reducing water consumption
    • Increasing energy efficiency

The DE&S Chief of Corporate Services (CCS) is the MOD sustainable procurement champion and chairs the Sustainable Procurement Programme Board (SPPB) with representatives from:

  • Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S)
  • Defence Estates (DE)
  • Directorate Safety and Claims (DS&C)

The Guide to Sustainability in Defence Acquisition [169KB PDF], dated September 2009, provides guidance on:

  • MOD policy on Sustainable Procurement.
  • How sustainability should be addressed throughout the acquisition lifecycle.

The Guide to Sustainability in Defence Acquisition includes a Sustainable Procurement Flexible Framework [22KB PDF]. The Framework is a maturity matrix which helps to measure the attainment of the MODs high level objective:
