What is the role of Policy Guidance ?

Policy guidance is the basis for identifying the military capability needed by our Armed Forces:

  • The MOD policy staffs provide policy guidance to the Capability Sponsor, primarily through Defence Strategic Guidance (DSG).
  • Where the guidance introduces major changes to policy or concepts, the policy staffs will engage directly with the Capability Sponsor in capability change planning.
  • As the overall Equipment and Support (E&S) Plan is developed, the risk against policy compliance is assessed. Where necessary policy staff will be consulted to ensure capability requirements match our resources.
