The Acquisition Lifecycle

The acquisition lifecycle is the key roadmap for delivering projects effectively and efficiently on a through life basis.

The typical acquisition lifecycles are:

  • Traditional Sequential Acquisition (for example CADMID, CADMIT)
  • Incremental Acquisition
  • Evolutionary Acquisition
  • Hybrid Acquisition.

The Traditional Sequential approach is the most common. This cradle to grave lifecycle is broken down into a number of discrete phases. The phases of the CADMID / CADMIT cycle are:

  • Concept
  • Assessment
  • Demonstration
  • Manufacture / Migration
  • In-service
  • Disposal / Termination.

An incremental approach maybe based upon the CADMID / CADMIT lifecycle, but will use a series of separate acquisitions to deliver discrete capability enhancements over time. The incremental approach is often associated with Initial Operating Capability (IOC) and Full Operating Capability (FOC).

An evolutionary approach to acquisition takes the experience gained developing and operating systems, as well as advances in technology and new requirements. These can be applied to develop improvements to later versions.

A ‘hybrid’ approach employs a combination of approaches. For example, it maybe decided that a Traditional Sequential approach is appropriate for the base platform, but that an evolutionary approach is more applicable to the acquisition of certain sub-elements.

Selection of the most appropriate acquisition lifecycle strategy is a vital factor in progamme and project success.
