Acquisition Skills

The Acquisition Community is broad, and the range, depth of skills and knowledge needed is diverse. People working in Acquisition are encouraged to develop a range of skills for their roles including:

  • Increasing their practical experience.
  • Attaining professional qualifications.

The strategies developed by all business areas across the Acquisition Community should reflect the policies of Director Training Education (DTE). The business areas should ensure individuals have the opportunity to develop the required skills and knowledge as well as increase their level of professionalism.

The skills required are identified by using the following:

All staff must take ownership for both their professional and personal development. However, it is the Line Manager’s responsibility for identifying any skills or experience gaps.

Successful Defence Acquisition requires professional expertise across a number of key functions. To make sure that this expertise is available to support the aims of the department, deliver the required outcomes, and to achieve the Defence Vision, skills growth plans are developed.

Skills Growth Plans are produced by Skills Champions across the Department and describe:

  • The professional standards and skills gaps that exist for specific Job Families and Functions.
  • The appropriate actions that can be used to reduce or remove this gap.

Top Level Budgets will use the Skills Growth Plans to determine the investment they will make in training, in order to increase the level of professionalism of staff (this is called upskilling).

The Guide to Acquisition Training and Education (GATE) is the Defence Academy’s publication that captures the key acquisition related courses available to MOD and Defence Industries staff.

The following links provide further information

The courses included in the GATE are grouped into six key areas:

  • Programme and Project Management
  • Commercial
  • Resource Management
  • Logistics
  • Engineering and Science
  • Information.

GATE also includes a series of leadership and management courses open to all.
