Purpose and Role of Science Innovation Technology (SIT)

SIT Purpose

Defence needs to deliver battle-winning technology for the Armed Forces in support of operations today, tomorrow and in the future.

SIT defines and delivers the Defence research programme that provides the scientific understanding and the new technologies to meet this key need.

What is the Role of SIT?

The role of SIT is to maintain the open and comprehensive Defence Technology PlanExternal link to Internet content that:

  • Meets the needs of key stakeholders.
  • Identifies and responds to the opportunities and threats presented by science and technology to Defence.
  • Delivers the Defence Technology Plan through a comprehensive research programme that harnesses a diverse supplier base through innovative acquisitions and partnerships which promote cutting edge technologies and support operations.
  • Will enable a vibrant, innovative science and technology supplier base that meets defence needs today, tomorrow and in the future, and promotes the creation of wealth.
  • Pursues opportunities to reduce the through-life costs of equipment through application of new or novel technologies.
  • Enhances international, industrial and other forms of collaboration to increase interoperability, mutual benefits and value for money.
