Purpose and Role of Defence Science and Technology (DST)
DST Purpose
The Armed Forces need battle-winning technology for operations today, tomorrow and in the future. DST is responsible for the Defence research programmes to provide the scientific understanding and the new technologies to meet this key need.
What is the role of DST?
In order to meet its stated aim, DST:
- Provides Science and Technology (S&T) support to operations.
- Shapes MOD’s S&T investment to best match its present and future needs.
- Develops partnerships with industry and academia, including international collaboration.
- Identifies alternatives and provides constructive challenge to inform the equipment programme.
- Ensures S&T careers are developed and champions science and engineering skills across MOD.
