Scope of the MOD Estate

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has a world-wide estate valued at some £15.3 billion. The estate is some 240,000 hectares – equivalent to 1% of the UK land mass – making MOD one of the largest landowners in the United Kingdom. .

This estate is made up of:

  • “Built” estate (80,000 hectares) – barracks, naval bases, depots, aircraft hangers and the like.
  • “Rural” estate (160,000 hectares) – relatively undeveloped land which includes 21 major and 39 minor training areas for the armed forces.
  • "Housing" estate – around 42,000 Service Family Accommodation (SFA) or houses.
  • 4000 sites.
  • Significant overseas estate in Germany, Cyprus, the Falkland Islands and Gibraltar.
  • Major overseas training facilities in Canada, Cyprus, Germany, Norway, Poland and Kenya.
  • In excess of 300 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), protected or conservation sites.
  • Over 700 statutorily protected or listed buildings.
  • Over 1000 scheduled monuments.
  • A large number of archaeological sites.

The AOF has been updated to Version 2.0.0 on 1st April 2008 following the introduction of the main content in the tactical layer. In addition small changes have been added to the Operational layer. Individual document Change History pages will detail any changes other than minor editorial amendments.
